One of the tough things about doing these course reviews is remaining unbiased in my judgement despite dealing with such nice people. Special thank you to Adam Slawson from Lionhead for helping set this up; you and your staff were super kind and it is very much appreciated. That being said, although I thoroughly enjoyed my round here, I have to admit this course likely won’t make the top-5 list. There were quite a few good and great things about the Legends Course at Lionhead (which is operated under the Kaneff umbrella of golf courses), but there were also a few things I didn’t love.

First, the good:

PROS

  • This is a very tough course; in fact the scorecard lists it as “The most challenging golf course in Canada and the third most challenging public course in North America.” (*which, despite the claim most likely being factually based on slope and course ratings, I don’t necessarily agree with) but my opinion aside, this course will indisputably test the game of any golfer at any level.
  • Not every hole requires Driver off the tee; a nice change that allows you to use every club in your bag
  • There are a lot of thought provoking tee-shots and approaches, requiring a lot of strategy
  • Good balance of water, fescue, trees, rough and bunkers
  • Good use of elevation changes off of tees and contouring throughout, especially around the greens
  • Greens were nice; rolled fast and pure, with a lot of subtle breaks/undulation
  • Nice golf property with two 18-hole courses, a driving range, putting green, nice amenities
  • Friendly staff and marshals
  • Close drive from downtown Toronto

And alas, the bad:

CONS

  • Too many blind or unexplained tee shots. Several times we stood on the tee and didn’t know what was ahead of us or how far it was to a hazard or fairway. More signage/yardages on the course or scorecards for these holes would be a huge help
  • The course wasn’t in the best condition. Several tee-boxes were uneven or chewed up, and there were a lot of wet spots in fairways and around greens. Obviously there are different circumstances this year with COVID, but I haven’t seen this issue at many other courses of this caliber
  • We had a bit of confusion between holes on where to go. More signage or directional information would be helpful
  • It’s hard to put into words, but it just wasn’t a very “fun” course. As I said in the “pros” section, it is a very difficult course, but I would have liked a couple of reprieves with driveable par-4’s or reachable par-5’s sprinkled in here-and there
  • Overall most of my issues are just ones that affect a first-time player of the course. If you were to be a member or regular here, the tee-shot and direction issues wouldn’t be issues at all and I do like the strategy involved in courses that make you think and not just pull Driver on every tee-box
