48-year-old Jim Furyk captured the hearts and minds of the golf world once again on Sunday, turning back the clock to finish in solo second place in the Players Championship. In the process Furyk re-introduced the public to his gritty, consistent style of game. The man holding his bag, 71-year old Mike “Fluff” Cowan, deserves a fair share of the praise too though.
Furyk on Fluff & the tee shot on 17:
“He’s pretty amazing. He doesn’t change much out there. I’ve always said this: He loves what he does for a living, he likes coming to work and he never changes, whether I’m shooting 80 or shooting 65. You can’t ask for any more than that. I was so jacked up on 17, I actually got a yardage from the wrong (bulk)head.”
Fluff On Furyk’s birdie putt on the 18th:
“Just f—ing perfect, it’s turning and rolling, foot from the hole it straightens out and if anything wiggles right… He’d hit the same putt again.”
Sunday playing partner Joel Dahmen on Furyk & Fluff:
“Fluff and Jim have their own language out there… No one knows what Fluff is saying, because it all gets mumbled in the mustache. But when it got in the nitty-gritty, they were really chatting it up.”

I mean, would you not run through a wall for that man?! 71-years-old and still full of piss & vinegar. Include the moustache, and Fluff is a first ballot hall-of-famer in the “golf guy” category. Oh, he used to caddie for Tiger Woods too. Legend.
Fluff is a 40-year PGA Tour veteran and has been on the bag for (along with Furyk and Woods) the likes of Peter Jacobsen, Michelle Wie, Fred Couples and Ed Sabo. Fluff was on the bag for Woods’ first career major win, the 1997 Masters, and in his first start with Jim Furyk they won the 2003 US Open at Olympia Fields.
