wgc-hsbc-champions-logoTournament: WGC –  HSBC Champions

Year: 2014

Winner: Bubba Watson (-11, playoff)

Details: A topsy-turvy final round in which five players all had legitimate shots at winning, all the way up until the 72nd hole.

Bubba Watson looked to be pulling away from the field as he came to the finishing stretch, but a bogey, double-bogey duo on 16 and 17 turned the tables and appeared to knock him out of the running for the win.

A hole-out eagle on the final hole changed that in a hurry though, putting pressure on the four golfers behind him to birdie their final hole and get into a playoff with Bubs. Tim Clark was the first to attempt it, and he succeeded; knocking in a 4-footer for birdie. The three players in the final group then had their turn up the final hole, all needing birdie to join Clark and Watson. 54-hole leader Graeme McDowell, along with Martin Kaymer and Hiroshi Iwata, were all unable to convert, so the duo of Clark and Watson made their way back to the tee of the par-5 18th.

Tim Clark was wasn’t able to make birdie there, leaving Bubba a 20-footer for birdie and the win. He nailed it.
